The witness
Hungarian film satire, 103 minutes, 1969
József Pelikán is a faithful communist who fought with his principled friends throughout the troubled years. Now, after their victory, during the cult of personality, he also does dedicated work as a gatekeeper. He pounces on the poacher, who turns out to be his old friend and comrade-in-arms, Dániel Zoltán, who is currently a minister. It is this dear friend who brings him down against his will when the authorities show up because of a black cut. Pelikan goes to prison, from where he is promoted to a higher and higher position. He will be the director of the amusement park, the swimming pool, and later an orange farm. Of course, none of this is a gift. Comrade Virág emphasizes every time that they will ask Pelikán for something one day. And this time will come when Zoltán Dániel is arrested on trumped-up charges...
The film won the Ecumenical Jury Prize in Cannes.
